Teaching Excellence in Adult Literacy
American Institutes for Research is pleased to announce the Teaching Excellence in Adult Literacy (TEAL) Center, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE). The purpose of the Center is to improve the quality of instruction in adult education and literacy programs through technical assistance (TA) and professional development (PD).
In collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs), Center staff will develop PD materials that support evidence-based instruction across content areas and incorporate practices of cognitive and metacognitive strategy instruction, formative and diagnostic assessment, differentiated instruction, and universal design for learning (UDL). Staff also will provide TA and professional development to teams from up to 12 states to implement the materials, using a blend of face-to-face and distance learning approaches.
TEAL Center
The TEAL Center supports teacher quality in adult education through three interrelated efforts:
• Support for teachers to implement the critical components of teaching quality and excellence,
• Translation of research to practice, and
• A continuum of PD and TA strategies to meet the various needs of the diverse adult education state and local audiences.
